. . . was it creepy??? Wicked digital smile for the drum roll . . . No. No a lot of times it wasn't creepy at all, but sometimes and in the right circumstances it could get creepy especially on the phonograph and gramophone.
I got some great videos below but first for your reading pleasure:
- Southern Music in the 20th Century is an awesome resource with descriptions of music of the time for various time periods in the 20th century. Here is their entry for the 1900s. Very informative.
- Article about Joseph Horowitz in Moral Fire: Musical Portraits from America’s Fin de Siècle Buy it on Amazon! (Why historians use the french term to describe America turn of the century - I don't know but they do . . . go to admit it sounds cooler . . .)
- The symphonies really were great. Here's a list of Composers by Century on Wikipedia. Pick one and Youtube it like I did for Gustav Mahler:
- The Legend of 1900 film clip Piano Duel Part 1 and Part 2
- This video is of some kind of phonograph show so the guy interrupts the music to talk every couple of minutes but at least he's switching it up to give us some variety and tells us who is playing . . .
- History of the Gramophone:
- Okay this video is all Ragtime which is not creepy and I hate it but they did listen to ragtime a lot during this period so listen and see the title . . . maybe you will like it.
Can you find any creepy turn of the century music online? Go out on Youtube or find one of those websites with music clips and track down those creepy Fin de Seicle tunes! Link to them in the comments!
