I recommend a technique book for plotting: "Building Better Plots" by Robert Kernen. The book isn't directly related to historical fiction but all fiction needs good plotting. I highly recommend this book for getting a good knowledge of the basic elements and functions of plot. Once you understand plot, you will know the base components every story needs to be successful, interesting, and satisfying to the reader.

Join the Discussion: This book brings up interesting points when it comes to the use of archetypes, i.e. common conventions for story types like "the quest" or "the hero's tale?" Do you guys like to use archetypes in your historical fiction or not and why?
